Abernathy Gardens in Newport News

Living in Newport News, I see a lot. There are more historic spots in this city than I have fingers and toes, and I have to say, the city does a great job preserving these places. Other places aren't exactly historical, but they're still symbolic for the community.

One of those places is Abernathy Gardens at Causey's Mill Park. Quietly tucked behind Riverside Regional Medical Center, it's a tranquil place, dedicated to the beauty of nature and all of its gifts. It's a place I love to come to when I have a lot on my plate, and I need time to reflect. It was named for George and Estelle Abernathy, two community leaders whose service to this city still positively affects us all.

If you live in Newport News and haven't been to this quiet spot, I encourage you to take five minutes to stop by and soak up the beauty. If you happen to be a visitor to our fare city, add this spot to your list of things to do.

Welcome to the Orange Soda Periodical

Welcome to my new publication, the Orange Soda Periodical. Why start a new publication? Why not?

So I had to decide what I wanted to do with this publication. Was it going to be just another blog? Would I post media on the site? Would it be a fundraising place?

In the end, I decided to turn this into a photojournalism publication. Namely, I wanted to have a place to post photos of the people, places and events that move me. I live in a historically rich region of the country, and I want to share some of that with everyone. And, when it's practical, I'll share photos from my travels around the country.

So please, feel free to poke around. If you find something you like, crack open a can or bottle of your favorite orange soda and enjoy the scenery.
